OpenAI’s GPT Store delayed to 2024 following leadership chaos
OpenAI: GPT-5 is coming, "we'll see" if it creates a shockwave
GPT-4.5 is the model thatwas hiding under the name Orion(previously thought to be o1/o3) and it will be the last one to not have a «chain of reasoning». With the release of GPT-5, all OpenAI models will become «one», andartificial intelligence with the ability to reasonwill simply become another common feature of the company’s products. While Altman did not provide a GPT-5 release timeframe, he did say that OpenAI has plenty of things to release in the coming months. Instead, the company believes that developers will likely naturally migrate quickly en masse to using the new model since it is a significant cost reduction and boost in intelligence and other capabilities.
General expectations are that the new GPT will be significantly “smarter” than previous models of the Generative Pre-trained Transformer.Other researchers have also dropped hints that GPT-5 will combine breakthroughs from all models to create a unified model. Those AI agents are developed by OpenAI as well, and that new feature would be a pretty big deal.At present, GPT-4o mini outperforms GPT-3.5 Turbo on a range of third-party benchmarks, other comparably classed models such as Google’s Gemini 1.5 Flash and Anthropic’s Claude 3 Haiku, and even GPT-4 itself on some tasks. To put GPT-4o mini’s cost into perspective, it’s 60% less than GPT-3.5 Turbo, previously the most affordable model among OpenAI’s offerings since the release of GPT-4o.
The delay is almost certainly due to the leadership shakeup that occurred in November, just after the initial announcement. The same anonymous employee also said that OpenAI is going to give GPT-5 new capabilities. For example, GPT-5 might be able to launch AI agents to perform certain tasks automatically.
OpenAI launches a general purpose agent in ChatGPT
Rumors aside, OpenAI did confirm a few days ago that the text-to video Sora service will launch publicly later this year. That might be one of the releases Altman teased in the interview. In early February, OpenAI chairman Sam Altman stated that GPT-4.5 would be available in «the coming weeks», while GPT-5 is scheduled for release in «the following months». At the same time, the latter will be available «without restrictions» in the free version of ChatGPT (the phrase «without restriction» in this case refers to the query limit, while access to «higher levels of the» model will be available only to paid users). Anthropic just unveiled Claude 3.0 and Google launched its Gemini 1.5 upgrade, though only the former is available to fans of generative AI tools.

"We’ll release in the coming months many different things," he continued. "I think before we talk about a GPT-5-like model called that, or not called that, or a little bit worse or a little bit better than what you’d expect from a GPT-5, I think we have a lot of other important things to release first." The launch of the store this month raised eyebrows when it was officially announced at OpenAI’s Dev Day conference in November. Though there was a working mockup of the store itself and a few of the fine-tuned models called GPTs available to inspect, there were a lot of unanswered questions.

As a guest on the Lex Fridman Podcast, Sam Altman said that the "honest answer" about GPT-5's release date is that he doesn't know. "Study together" could transform the way many of us use AI, especially if ChatGPT's way of quizzing you on the subject helps to cement info in your brain. I, for one, love learning about new things on a regular basis, so I can't wait to give this new tool a try. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.
So why would any developers still use the older, more expensive GPT-4o parent model?
Those AI agents are developed by OpenAI as well, and that new feature would be a pretty big deal. According to one of the unnamed executives who have tested GPT-5, the new language model is "really good" and "materially better" than the current versions of ChatGPT. Later in the interview, Altman was asked what aspects of the upgrade from GPT-4 to GPT-5 he's most excited about, even if he can't share specifics. "I know that sounds like a glib answer, but I think the really special thing happening is that it's not like it gets better in this one area and worse in others. It's getting like better across the board," he said.
Amplify your reach, spark real connections, and lead the innovation charge. The CEO conceded that OpenAI has "a lot of other important things to release" before they can talk about a GPT-5 model. An expert on all things Apple, he was previously iMore's How To Editor, and has a monthly column in MacFormat. John-Anthony has used the Apple ecosystem for over a decade, and is an award-winning journalist with years of experience in editorial. Last month, Sam Altman hinted at GPT-5 arriving during the Western Hemisphere's Summer months, and "Study together" could be part of that launch.
It's not clear how OpenAI has selected users for this trial, as in the same Reddit thread discussing the new mode, there's a variety of Plus account users and free users who are able to use "Study together". General expectations are that the new GPT will be significantly “smarter” than previous models of the Generative Pre-trained Transformer. Or that this trend will continue and the release will be pushed back even further? By now, it’s August, so we’ve passed the initial deadline by which insiders thought GPT-5 would be released.
Despite OpenAI's seemingly laissez-faire attitude about the LLM's unscheduled release date, however, complaints about GPT-4's apparent degradation have been stacking up in recent months as the model turns a year old. Folks within the company, BI's sources say, are hopeful that the release of GPT-5 and introduction of its impressive capabilities will quell those grumblings. Internal "red teaming" testing will follow so OpenAI can iron out potential issues before making the next-gen ChatGPT model more widely available. However, if these execs are correct and they have had access to the GPT-4 successor, it means OpenAI has already completed a major round of training.
For OpenAI customers, GPTs can still be made and shared with others directly, but they will not be publicly listed or able to take part in any revenue-sharing scheme (if OpenAI decides how to implement one) until the store formally launches. OpenAI is under pressure to launch new generative AI products this year, especially ChatGPT updates. Google unveiled Gemini 1.5 a few weeks ago, and Anthropic released Claude 3.0. Also, Microsoft just brought custom Copilots to the Copilot experience.
In that same interview, the podcaster asked Altman if he could provide a ballpark release date, to which the CEO gave some rather cryptic answers. Indeed, even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has taken to trashing his company's latest publicly available model in a lengthy and wide-ranging interview with MIT researcher-cum-podcaster Lex Fridman. "It's really good, like materially better," one CEO told Business Insider of the LLM.
The latter is an OpenAI partner, but Copilot still competes with ChatGPT. None of this is confirmed, and OpenAI hasn't made any official announcements about ChatGPT's GPT-5 upgrade. The company told ArsTechnica it doesn't have a comment on the Business Insider story. But a spokesperson offered a snippet from Sam Altman's interview I mentioned before. The one where the CEO teases other releases before GPT-5 rolls along, if it's even called that.
